No Doubt’s badass front-woman Gwen Stefani is rarely seen in pink (better yet, make that NEVER seen in pink). Red lips? Yes! Outlandish outfits? Yes! White platinum-blonde hair? Yes? Pink? Um, hell no. That is, until now!
The 42-year-old rocksteady L.A.M.B. designer was transformed into a modern day cotton-candy pink “My Fair Lady” for the September cover of Harper’s Bazaar. Sashaying in gorgeous designers like Dior, Oscar De La Renta, Alexander McQueen, Chloe, Versace, and Givenchy Haute Coutoure on the pages inside the issue, the singer opened up about her band’s humble fashion beginnings.
“I did my own makeup, my own costumes,” Stefani revealed. “I did everything myself. I didn’t even know there were stylists.”
These days, things are definitely different for the high maintenance star. ”I’ve always been a girl who loves to dress up,” she told the magazine. “I already put my makeup on twice today: I put it on to take my kid to school, and then I went home, washed my face, and put it on again to have lunch with you.”
Gwen also loves to up the glamor factor for her husband Gavin Rosdale. “I like to make my husband like me more,†she quipped.
Also in the interview, which appears in the largest issue in Harper’s Bazaar‘s 145-year history, Stefani describes when her love affair with make-up (and red lipstick) actually began. “I remember sitting in my ghetto, beat-up Honda Prelude, and putting on that lipstick in the rear-view mirror and being like, ‘Uh-huh, I like that. That’s the sh** right there,’” Stefani said of the first tube of red lipstick her grandmother gave her. “I never stopped after that.”
As for her signature blonde tresses, Stefani spent eight hours in a salon nearly 18 years ago to transform from a brunette to a blonde. “It was like I’d unlocked the key,†she says of the hair coloring session. “I remember feeling like, ‘I have arrived. This is me. Finally.’”
