Obama Nominates Black Lesbian for Federal Judge
On Thursday, Obama nominated Staci Michelle Yandle, who–if confirmed–would become the first Black lesbian judge in 20 years, according to Politico. So far, the president has nominated more Black judges and LGBT judges than any other president. Yandle is a private practice attorney and is Obama’s choice for the district court for the Southern District in Illinois.
Action Item: Teen Injured During Stop-and-Frisk
An emergency meeting has been called in Philadelphia to deal with some serious and troubling allegations against area police. A group of four White officers have been accused of roughing a 16-year-old honor student up so badly that it caused injury to his genitalia.
BET to Honor Aretha Franklin and Berry Gordy
The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and Motown founder Berry Gordy are among honorees for the 2014 BET Honors, according to the Associated Press. The special, which airs Feb. 24, will also honor Ice Cube, American Express CEO Ken Chenault and photographer and video artist Carrie Mae Weems. Actor and comedian Wayne Brady is expected to host. No word yet on who will be performing.
Rev. Wright Criticizes Obama
While Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “had a dream,” the president’s former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright reportedly said “Obama has a drone,” according to the Sun Times. The controversial Chicago pastor also said: “Every Tuesday morning, there’s a kill list that the president decides who they’re going to kill this week.”
Picture of Black Gay Dads Causes Twitter Uproar
It’s sad that in 2014 a picture of two Black gay men taking care of their daughters would cause such a stink. But we commend Kaleb and Kordell, who posted the below picture with the caption: “Being fathers is getting our daughters up at 5:30 AM, making breakfast, getting them ready for school, and putting them on the bus by 6:30. This is a typical day in our household. It’s not easy but we enjoy every moment and every minute of #fatherhood. #proudfathers #blackfathers #prouddads #gaydads.”
