GRAND MARAIS, Minn. — A Minnesota man was charged Friday with fatally beating an elderly man previously convicted of child sexual assault, who he believed had stalked his young daughter in the past.

Levi Axtell, 27, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Lawrence V. Scully, 77, who was beaten to death Wednesday at his home in Grand Marais.

A criminal complaint filed Friday said Axtell killed Scully with a shovel and a moose antler and then drove to the Cook County Sheriff's office and confessed, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

At a video hearing on Friday, Axtell's bail was set at $1 million.

Defense attorney Dennis Shaw noted during the hearing that Axtell had no serious criminal history until now and his longtime ties to Grand Marais made him a minimal flight risk.

Axtell remains jailed in Cook County. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 10.

In 2018, Axtell alleged that Scully was stalking his 22-month-old daughter and other children in his van, which he parked near her Grand Marais daycare.

Axtell sought an order of protection, which was granted but then dismissed within several weeks, according to court records.

In 1979, Scully was convicted in Kanabec County, Minnesota, of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl, according to Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen. He was released from prison in 1982.

On Wednesday, Axtell arrived at the sheriff's office covered in blood and “put his hands on his head and said that he had murdered (Scully) with a shovel,” according to Friday's criminal complaint.

After receiving the complaint, officer Tyler and his partner arrived at Villa Norte Apartment Complex around 11 p.m. to investigate the call. When the officers encountered Bagley, he allegedly jumped from a balcony, trying to escape on foot.

Authorities then say that's when officer Tyler saw Bagley round the corner of a building. Tyler then fired one shot, hitting the unarmed Black man in the chest. Bagley was given CPR and then taken to a hospital where he later died.

Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Lamar Davis told the public during a recent press conference that the incident was recorded on police body camera, and will be made public, though his timetable for the release was vague. Davis has asked the public to “remain patient as we continue to conduct a very thorough investigation.”

A spokesperson for the family told KSLA, that the incident started when a neighbor called the police because the music was too loud in Bagley's apartment. He went on to say that Bagley and his wife were both inside the apartment when police came and at some point, Bagley did run from the police before he was shot.

The family has also hired attorney Ron Haley, whose clients include the family of Ronald Greene, a Black motorist killed in 2019 by Louisiana state police.

“Our office will walk through this process with the Bagley family, to ensure transparency and accountability,” Haley's firm said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Officer Alexander Tyler, who was hired by SPD in May of 2021, has been placed on administrative leave pending an ongoing investigation.

According to WBRZ, the FBI and the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division have been contacted about the shooting.

Alonzo Bagley's death comes just a month after Tyre Nichols was brutally beaten and killed by Memphis police after he was pulled over at a traffic stop for “reckless driving.”

His death as well as Bagley's have sparked a renewed demand for congress to pass comprehensive police reform legislation.

Three men have been arrested in connection with the shooting of Lil Tjay, one of which police believe to have been the shooter. Police say the rapper was the victim of an alleged attempted robbery. Lil Tjay was shot Wednesday morning when Mohamed Konate allegedly attempted to rob him and two other men he was with at the time. Following emergency surgery, Tjay went from critical to stable condition.

Uvalde, Texas — Frustrated onlookers urged police officers to charge into the Texas elementary school where a gunman's rampage killed 19 children and two teachers, witnesses said Wednesday, as investigators worked to track the massacre that lasted upwards of 40 minutes and ended when the 18-year-old shooter was killed by a Border Patrol team.

“Go in there! Go in there!” nearby women shouted at the officers soon after the attack began, said Juan Carranza, 24, who saw the scene from outside his house across the street from Robb Elementary School in the close-knit town of Uvalde. Carranza said the officers did not go in.

Javier Cazares, whose fourth grade daughter, Jacklyn Cazares, was killed in the attack, said he raced to the school when he heard about the shooting, arriving while police were still gathered outside the building.

Upset that police were not moving in, he raised the idea of charging into the school with several other bystanders.

“Let's just rush in because the cops aren't doing anything like they are supposed to,” he said. “More could have been done.”

Lubbock, Texas— The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office arrested Julius Douglas, 27, for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Tuesday.

LCSO deputies reported to a shots-fired call. A woman had been shot, and she told officers to look for a white four-door car, according to court documents. The woman told deputies the driver stopped and approached her. Deputies also talked to a second witness who was able tell them which way the car went.

Deputies talked to Douglas, who stated he was high on drugs the night of the shooting and was not the suspect.

“Douglas went on to advise he let a guy by the name of Benjamin Wheeler borrow his car after Benjamin provided him with some money and drugs,” official records said.

As of Wednesday, Douglas' bond was set at $125,000.

Parts of the arrest warrant were edited out. The portions provided to EverythingLubbock.com gave no clear answer to why the shooting happened. The arrest warrant only stated Douglas drove up to the victim's car, got out, shot her, and drove away.
